Priest's Crag

The walk up Priest's Crag from Penrith is straightforward but properly rewarding. You're looking at a modest peak - nothing that'll take your breath away athletically - but the views across the Eden Valley and towards the Lake District fells make it a decent afternoon out. The crag itself is a craggy outcrop on the eastern flank of the fell, and on clear days you can see right across to the Pennines. It takes about an hour to get up from the car park, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to admire the view.

This is walker territory, really. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog, though it's nothing technical - just steady uphill through moorland and bracken. History buffs won't find much to chew on here; it's about the walking and the landscape, not the stories. Fair weather is essential; clouds roll in quickly in this part of Cumbria and you'll lose the views entirely.

Being so close to Penrith, it works well as part of a larger holiday around Ullswater, especially if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Ullswater Holiday Park is less than a mile away and would be a natural base. It's the sort of walk you'd do on a morning when the weather looks decent, then head down to the lake itself for the afternoon. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Lake District break.
