Sleet Fell

Sleet Fell sits quietly in the northern Lake District, a modest 699-metre peak that doesn't grab headlines the way Helvellyn or Scafell do. That's rather the point. The walk up from near Penrith is straightforward fell-walking without the crowds, offering proper views across the valley and back towards the higher fells if the weather plays ball.

This is walkers' terrain, pure and simple. Not particularly technical, but you'll want decent boots and a map - the fell can feel featureless in mist. Allow two to three hours for a solid outing, depending on your fitness and which approach you take. The views aren't dramatic in the dramatic sense, but there's something pleasant about standing up here without queuing for a summit selfie. Families with older kids who've done a few hills will manage fine; those with toddlers might find it a bit of a slog for limited reward.

The real value is as part of a broader fell day rather than a standalone trip. Penrith sits close enough that you could pair it with other walks in the area, or base yourself at one of the local holiday parks - Ullswater Holiday Park is just 2.6 miles away and gives you access to the broader eastern Lake District. It's the sort of walk you do because you're already in Cumbria and want to properly use your legs, not because it's on a bucket list. Sometimes that's exactly what a park holiday needs.
