Preston Twins

Two chalk formations rising sharply from the Sussex landscape - that's what the Preston Twins are. They're distinctive enough to spot from miles around, which is probably why they've become a minor landmark for walkers and locals who know the area well. You won't find crowds here, and honestly, that's part of their appeal.

The formations themselves are a geological curiosity rather than a full day's activity. Most people heading out from Brighton stop by for a look while hiking the South Downs Way or exploring the surrounding countryside. The walk to reach them is straightforward, and the views back toward the coast are the real reason to make the journey. It's the kind of place that rewards you for showing up, even if you're only here for thirty minutes.

They work best as part of a broader South Downs ramble rather than a destination in themselves. If you're camped at Pegs and Pitches or Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just a few miles away, adding the Twins to your walking route makes sense. Foot of the Downs and Southdown Way are also close enough that you could easily combine this with your park base.

Best visited during decent weather when you can actually see something. Muddy winter afternoons won't do the formations justice. Admission appears free - these are natural landmarks, after all - and you're looking at an hour or two including the walk and a proper look around. Walkers will appreciate them more than families with young children.
