Preston Park Pillar

A Victorian pillar standing alone on Preston Park's open grassland - that's what you're looking at. Built in the 1880s as a memorial, it's one of those local landmarks that catches your eye on a walk but most people don't actually know much about. The thing is, it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're already in Brighton.

The pillar itself is modest in height but commands attention across the flat park. You can walk right up to it, read the inscriptions if the weather's been kind to them, and get a proper sense of why the Victorians bothered putting it there. It's not a major undertaking - five minutes to walk over, ten minutes of poking about - but it adds a layer to what might otherwise be just a stroll through open space.

Walkers and local history types will find it more interesting than casual visitors. Kids might enjoy the "treasure hunt" aspect of spotting it across the park, but it won't hold their attention long. The park itself is where the real appeal lies - plenty of room to wander, and it's genuinely pleasant on a decent day.

If you're camping nearby at Pegs and Pitches (just a couple of minutes away) or any of the other grounds within a few miles, Preston Park is a natural option for a morning or afternoon outing. Brighton's close enough that you could combine it with the seafront or the Lanes. Admission appears to be free, and there's no specific opening hours - it's a public park. Go whenever the mood takes you.
