Preesall Park

The saltmarsh and woodland at Preesall Park is a proper working landscape, not some manicured nature reserve you'll find over-explained and fenced off. Midwood's only about a mile away, which makes it dead convenient if you're based at Moss Wood Caravan Park nearby.

You're here for the birds, really. Waders and wildfowl come through in good numbers, especially in autumn migration when things get properly lively. The paths are flat and walkable, though they can get boggy depending on when you visit. Don't expect visitor centres or tea shops - this is the real thing, quiet and a bit raw around the edges.

It's the sort of place that rewards early mornings or late afternoons when the light's soft and the birds are active. An hour and a half is plenty if you're just after a decent stomp and some binoculars work. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely into spotting things.

Winter's excellent here when migratory species move in, but spring's lovely too if you time it right. The walk clears your head without demanding anything of you - no summit to reach, no tick boxes to fill. Just you, the marsh, and whatever's choosing to show itself that day. If you're staying caravan-side in the area and fancy something low-key that doesn't feel like every other nature spot, this fits the bill.
