Fleetwood Museum

Fleetwood's maritime heritage is impossible to ignore once you walk into this museum, and it's frankly the best way to understand why this Lancashire town mattered. The collection tells the story of a 19th-century port that once rivalled Liverpool - fishing, engineering, the lot. You'll find ship models, old photographs of the docks in their heyday, and enough artefacts to keep history buffs occupied for a solid couple of hours.

It's not flashy, but that's rather the point. Real local museums tend to feel authentic, and this one does. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might lose interest after 30 minutes unless they're genuinely into maritime stuff. Walkers staying at Broadwater Holiday Park or Haven Cala Gran (both just down the road) could easily slot this in on a rainy afternoon - Fleetwood's compact enough that you won't waste time getting here.

The town itself is worth a wander. The seafront has proper character, the pier's still standing, and there are decent fish and chip shops dotted about. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Pointer Farm or Midwood are close too - a couple of hours here breaks up a seaside holiday nicely without requiring a major expedition. Don't expect anything fancy, but do expect to leave with genuine respect for what Fleetwood once was.
