About Powter How

The walk up Powter How from Keswick takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with views across Derwentwater that justify the leg work. It's a modest fell rather than a proper mountain - you won't need ropes or experience, just reasonable fitness and decent boots. The summit sits at 1,155 feet and opens up to the full sweep of the lake with Catbells rising dramatically opposite.

Walkers will love this one. It's short enough for families with older kids, and the path is clear enough that you won't spend half the day squinting at a map. The scramble near the top gets steep but never technical. Plan ninety minutes total if you're stopping for photographs and views.

Go on a clear day - I made the mistake of tackling it in drizzle once and the visibility was hopeless, which rather defeats the purpose. Early morning is better than afternoon when the lake can look grey and flat. Free, naturally, like most Lakeland peaks.

If you're based at one of the campsites near Keswick - Castlerigg Hall or Whinfell Farm are both close - this makes an excellent half-day outing that doesn't demand a full mountain expedition. Combine it with a walk around the lake shore afterwards, or head into Keswick for a proper tea. It's the kind of fell that gets overlooked in favour of the bigger names, which makes it all the better when you've got the view to yourself.
