Pow Mill

The ruins of Pow Mill sit quietly beside the Pow Burn, a few miles from Kinross, and they're genuinely easy to walk past without realising what you're looking at. This is a medieval mill - probably 14th or 15th century - that once ground grain for the local community, and what remains is mostly foundation stones and the occasional fragment of worked stone that tells you something substantial once stood here.

It's not dramatic stuff. There's no soaring arch or intact tower, just the bones of the building laid out on the ground, and you'll need to use a bit of imagination to picture the waterwheel and the machinery that would have occupied this spot. That said, if you're into industrial archaeology or you just like the idea of standing where people actually worked centuries ago, it's worth the detour from Kinross.

The walk here is pleasant enough - you're following a burn through decent countryside, and there's something satisfying about finding archaeology that isn't roped off or turned into a visitor centre. Allow 30 minutes to look around properly and take some photos. Best visited after rainfall when the water's running and you can get a proper sense of why the mill was built where it is.

If you're camping at Gallowhill or staying at Wild Goose Glamping nearby, this makes an easy morning stroll before heading to the bigger attractions around Perth or Stirling. It won't keep kids entertained for long, but families who like low-key history walks will appreciate the quiet and the burn.
