Potts Hill

The walk up Potts Hill rewards you with proper views across Lancaster and out towards Morecambe Bay - the kind of outlook that makes the climb worth your while. It's not a massive peak, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a gentle stroll. The terrain can be boggy in places, especially after rain, and the path isn't always obvious, so decent boots are non-negotiable.

You're looking at roughly an hour up and the same back down, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. On a clear day the vista stretches far enough to make you feel like you've properly earned it. Walkers will get the most from this one - families with younger kids might find the ground conditions frustrating, and there's nothing at the summit itself, just the view and a bit of wind.

It sits nicely within reach of Lancaster itself, making it a solid half-day addition to a broader exploration of the area. If you're staying at Crook O'Lune Holiday Park just down the road, you can knock this off before lunch and still have the afternoon free. The Lune Valley walking routes link up reasonably well too, so you could easily string together a longer day if you fancied it.

Go midweek if you can - weekends bring the local hiking crowd, and the boggy patches get churned up fast. Autumn's best, when the views clear up and the ground firms.
