Pot House Hill

The walk up Pot House Hill isn't one that'll take your breath away with dramatic peaks or sweeping views, but it's a proper little workout tucked into the landscape near Skipton. You're looking at a modest moorland hike with enough incline to earn your effort and enough open country to make it feel like you've actually gone somewhere.

The hill itself sits in moorland terrain - rough grass and exposed ground rather than the craggy drama you'd find further north. What you get is that lovely sense of space and quiet that the Dales do so well, plus reasonable visibility across the surrounding country when the weather plays ball. It's the kind of walk that families with competent kids will enjoy without anyone getting too knackered, and it pairs nicely with the area's other outdoor attractions if you're based at one of the local glamping spots like Malham or Peaks and Pods.

Allow a couple of hours including a breather at the top. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no car park facilities - so you're going at it under your own steam. Free to access, obviously. The walk works best on a clearer day when you can actually see where you're going and get some satisfaction from the views.

It's less headline-grabbing than some of the Dales classics, but that's partly the appeal. You'll dodge the weekend crowds that swamp better-known walks in the area, and you'll get a genuine fell-walking experience without the tourist machinery. Worth the detour if you're staying nearby for a longer park holiday, less worth chasing specially from further afield.
