Portsmouth Football Club

Fratton Park has been Portsmouth's football home since 1898, and standing outside the ground is enough to tell you this club has seen better days - and worse ones too. The stadium itself isn't much to look at from the street, all functional red brick and worn corners, but if you're into football history or you've got a son or daughter who bleeds blue, it's worth tracking down on the edge of Lee-on-the-Solent.

You can't just wander in and explore - this isn't that kind of attraction. Match days are the obvious draw, though Portsmouth currently plays in League Two, so expectations should be tempered. If you want the proper tour experience, you'll need to ring ahead or check online first, as visiting isn't a casual drop-in affair. The club museum does occasionally open to the public, and that's where the real story lives - old photos, programmes, memorabilia from their two top-flight championship wins back in the 1949 and 1950.

For families based at any of the nearby caravan parks - Kingfisher, Hayling Island, or Mill Rythe along the coast - this works as a rainy afternoon or if you've got a football-mad kid who needs entertaining. It's not a major draw on its own, mind you. Combine it with a walk along Southsea seafront or a visit to the Historic Dockyard, and you've got yourself a proper day out. Allow an hour or two maximum, and definitely call ahead before you turn up.
