Port Mor, dun site

The ruins of Port Mor sit on a windswept headland near Tarbert, where you can still make out the earthworks of an Iron Age dun - essentially a fortified settlement that would have been someone's power base around two thousand years ago. What remains is mostly the outline: banks and ditches cutting into the turf, broken stones, and that particular silence that always feels heavier at archaeological sites. You won't find interpretation boards or coffee shops here, which is rather the point.

It's a modest spot, honestly. Ten minutes of poking around is usually enough, maybe twenty if you're genuinely interested in Iron Age settlement patterns. The location itself is the real draw - standing there looking back toward the Sound of Jura, you understand why someone built a fortress here. Control the headland, control the sea routes.

History enthusiasts and walkers will get more from this than families with young children. There's no path, no facilities, and the ground can be boggy depending on weather. Free access, obviously - it's a ruin in the landscape, not a visitor attraction with management committees. Late spring through early autumn is when you'll find it most walkable.
