Garvalt, dun site

The remains of Garvalt dun sit on a hillside near Tarbert, a proper archaeological find if you know what to look for. It's the kind of place that rewards actually walking around rather than just pointing at it from the road - the stone foundations of an Iron Age fortification, weathered and half-hidden by bracken and grass. You won't find interpretation boards or visitor facilities here; it's just you, the landscape, and whatever history you can piece together from the stones themselves.

This is for people who genuinely enjoy archaeological sites and don't mind a bit of detective work. Historians will appreciate the dun's place in the region's ancient settlement patterns. Walkers heading through Argyll might find it a worthwhile short detour if they're already exploring the area around Tarbert. Children will probably get bored within ten minutes unless they're unusually interested in Bronze Age fortifications.

There's no entrance fee - you simply find your way up and have a look around. Allow maybe twenty to thirty minutes unless you're doing serious photography or sketching. The ground can be boggy, so decent boots help.

If you're staying at Muasdale Holiday Park or Killegruer Caravan Site nearby, Garvalt makes a manageable morning walk combined with exploring the rest of Argyll's landscape. It's not a blockbuster attraction, but it's free, it's there, and it does give you a tangible sense of how people lived on this peninsula thousands of years ago. Worth the walk if you're already in the area.
