Loch Beag

A small loch on the Kintyre Peninsula near Tarbert that's genuinely worth a quiet detour if you're already exploring this corner of Argyll. The water's dark and still, ringed by low hills and scrubby woodland - it's the sort of place that feels properly peaceful without being dramatic. There's a rough path around parts of it, though don't expect anything marked or maintained. Walkers get the most from Loch Beag. It's no Loch Lomond - the scenery is modest, honest rather than showy - but that's rather the point. You can do a gentle loop in maybe an hour, or just sit by the water and listen to the gulls. The loch itself is shallow and weedy, so swimming isn't appealing, and there's not much in the way of facilities or formal access points. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're keen on spotting birds or skimming stones. Come early morning for the best light and fewest people. If you're staying at Muasdale Holiday Park or Carradale Bay, it's an easy drive across - both are only a few miles away - and worth tacking onto a morning walk before heading elsewhere on the peninsula. The real magic here is in not being disappointed by low expectations. It's a genuine local spot, not a showpiece, and that's exactly what makes it worth visiting.
