Cnoc na Selig

The walk up Cnoc na Selig takes about forty minutes from Tarbert, and it's one of those Scottish hills that rewards effort without demanding serious mountaineering skills. You're looking at roughly 300 metres of ascent through bracken and grass, with the path becoming clearer as you climb. On a decent day the views across to Kintyre are genuinely worth the leg work - that broad sweep of water and the Mull of Kintyre beyond makes the huffing and puffing feel justified.

This one's for walkers who want a proper outing but aren't after a full day's expedition. You won't get bored - the terrain changes enough to keep things interesting, and there's something satisfying about bagging a peak that sits well above the surrounding landscape without being genuinely difficult. The nearest town, Tarbert, is small and functional rather than a draw in itself, but it's a convenient base if you're doing a few hills in the area.

If you're staying at one of the local caravan sites - Muasdale Holiday Park is just over two miles away, or head to Killegruer if you want a five-star rated spot - this makes a proper morning or early afternoon walk. Weather matters here; cloud cover can roll in quickly, so pick your day. Go for it on a clear morning and you'll understand why people bother with Scottish peaks. Allow two to three hours for the full round trip including time at the top.
