Popes Hill

Standing at 309 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly good views across the Severn Vale without the crowds that flock to the Cotswolds proper. The walk up from Dymock village takes about 45 minutes through mixed woodland and open fields - nothing too taxing, but enough to get the blood pumping.

Families with older children will appreciate the manageable climb and the reward at the top. On a clear day, you can spot the Malvern Hills to the north and the Forest of Dean spreading out to the west. It's not spectacular, but it's proper countryside walking without the parking nightmares of more famous spots.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic cliff edges or stone circles here. Just rolling Gloucestershire countryside as far as you can see. Perfect for a picnic if you've packed one, though there's precious little shelter if the weather turns.

Walkers staying at nearby sites like The Roost Retreats or Apple Orchard Camping will find this a decent half-day outing. Allow three hours total if you're taking it steady. Spring and autumn are lovely times to visit when the woods are at their best, though any time works if you're just after some fresh air and gentle exercise near Gloucester.
