Newnham-on-Severn

The Severn loops back on itself dramatically near Newnham-on-Severn, creating one of those geographical oddities that makes you stop and stare at a map. It's a proper meander - the river essentially turns back on itself, leaving a narrow strip of land jutting out like a thumb. From Gloucester, it's an easy drive south, and worth the trip if you're already camping in the area.

What you're actually doing here is walking or driving to viewpoints where you can see this geological quirk in person. The village itself is modest - a few houses, a church, nothing that'll keep you occupied for hours. But the landscape around it tells the story. The Severn estuary is tidal and dramatic, and when the light's right, the views across the water toward the Forest of Dean are genuinely striking.

It appeals to walkers mostly, and to anyone interested in geology or riverside scenery. You don't need more than an hour or so unless you're doing a longer ramble along the Severn Way. The best time is probably low tide, when you can see the mud flats and understand why this bend matters.
