Blaize Bailey Viewpoint

Five minutes' scramble through woodland above the Severn Valley and you reach one of Gloucestershire's least known but most rewarding elevated spots. The views stretch across the river valley towards the Forest of Dean, with Gloucester's cathedral spire just visible on clear days. It's properly peaceful up here - just birdsong and the distant hum of traffic from the A40 below.

Walkers will appreciate this as a decent halfway point on longer forest rambles, though it's worth the short detour on its own merit. The path up is well-defined but gets muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are sensible. Families with young children might find the climb a bit much, but older kids who don't mind a woodland adventure will love it.

Bring a thermos and make the most of the bench someone's thoughtfully positioned here. Early morning visits are particularly lovely when mist clings to the valley floor. The spot works well as part of a Forest of Dean exploration if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Whitemead Forest Park or Deanwood Holiday Cottages - both are within easy driving distance and make decent bases for this sort of gentle countryside wandering. Allow an hour return trip from the nearest car parking.
