Pond Plantation

Head out from Settle towards the limestone country and you'll come across Pond Plantation, a working landscape that feels properly Yorkshire in the best way - no fuss, no grand entrance, just trees and water doing their job. It's essentially a managed woodland area built around ponds and waterways, the sort of place where you notice how the light changes through the seasons rather than anything particularly dramatic happening in an afternoon.

Walkers get the most from this. The paths wind through the trees with decent views across the Dales, and it's the kind of spot where you can spend forty minutes or two hours depending on how many times you stop to look at things. History buffs might find themselves wondering about how this land's been shaped over time, but you won't find plaques or interpretation boards telling you what to think. Kids often enjoy pond-dipping if the season's right, though I'd bring them with realistic expectations - it's not a theme park, it's a wood with water in it.

If you're staying at Peaks and Pods or Malham Glamping Pods nearby, it's genuinely worth the short drive. The Dalesbridge Campsite sits closer still, making this an easy morning walk before heading into Settle proper for lunch. No admission fees that I'm aware of, just turn up when you fancy it. Best visited after rain when the ponds are full and the whole place feels alive, or early morning in spring when the birds are making a racket. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's a solid addition to a proper Dales walking trip.
