Pockthorpe Dog Park

The fields around Pockthorpe, just outside Driffield, open up suddenly - flat and generous, the kind of Yorkshire landscape that feels properly spacious after a cramped motorway drive. This is a nature reserve where dogs absolutely have the run of things, which is rather the point. Off-lead space without fences means your dog can actually stretch out properly instead of doing endless circuits of a postage-stamp enclosure.

What you're getting here is genuine countryside access. The reserve itself is straightforward - grassland, woodland edges, the occasional marshy bit - but that simplicity is its strength. Bring binoculars and you'll clock various birds; don't, and your dog will still have the time of their life. It's the sort of place where a spaniel genuinely earns its tired-out evening.

Family groups with younger children might find it a bit thin on entertainment if they're not walking types - there's no visitor centre, no café, no playground. But if you've got kids who'll scramble about in long grass and a dog that needs proper exercise, it works. Allow ninety minutes minimum; more if you actually want to watch wildlife rather than just rush through.

It slots well into a wider East Yorkshire break. East End Farm Campsite is barely four miles away, meaning you can do your dog walk before breakfast without far to travel. Thorpe Hall, only marginally further, offers the same convenient distance. Neither requires advanced planning - just rock up with a lead and wellies.
