Plumpton Wood

Walking through Plumpton Wood near Brackley feels like stepping back into proper ancient woodland - the kind where you half expect to bump into a forester from three centuries ago. The trees are old and dense, the undergrowth thick, and there's a genuine sense that this patch of Northamptonshire forest has been here far longer than the roads around it.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction with facilities. You'll find yourself on decent paths winding through mixed woodland - oak, ash, and beech mostly - with patches of open ground where light breaks through the canopy. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers; autumn turns it all copper and gold. The whole thing takes between 30 minutes and an hour depending on which route you fancy and how often you stop to listen to the birdsong.

Families with kids who actually like walking will get plenty from this. It's not a destination that'll keep restless under-tens entertained for hours, but it's brilliant for blowing cobwebs away between campsites. Dog walkers love it. Bird watchers find enough to keep them occupied. History types might appreciate that it's one of the older woodlands in the region - the kind of place that's been on maps for centuries.

With the Silverstone campsites and Jubilee Barn all within a few miles, Plumpton Wood works nicely as a morning or afternoon detour during a longer holiday in the area. No fees, no hassle - just a proper bit of Midlands woodland doing what it does best.
