Biddlesden Park

A working farm that's opened up its land to walkers and nature lovers, Biddlesden Park sits just outside Brackley in Northamptonshire. The reserve sprawls across open countryside with proper old-fashioned hedgerows, grassland, and patches of woodland that actually feel like someone's cared for them. You'll find yourself on decent walking paths that don't demand hiking boots - mostly firm ground, though it gets muddy after rain like everywhere else.

Walkers will get the most from this. Birdwatchers too, especially if you're after farmland species rather than exotic rarities. The kind of place where you spot thrushes, skylarks, and if you're lucky, a kestrel working the fields. Kids won't find it thrilling on its own - it's not a playground or visitor attraction with facilities - but it works well as part of a broader day out in the area.

The real strength is how it slots into a wider Northamptonshire trip. Base yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Silverstone Farm is just four miles away, as is Windmill Farm - and Biddlesden becomes a proper morning walk before you head off to Silverstone for the afternoon, or use it as a break from the circuit. Jubilee Barn offers something more luxurious if glamping appeals.

Go early if you can, when the light's better and you've got the paths mostly to yourself. Allow a couple of hours. Free access, as far as walkers are concerned. Not spectacularly different from dozens of other reserves, but genuinely pleasant on a clear day.
