Plot Wood

Plot Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Newark - the sort of place you'd stumble upon while exploring the Lincolnshire countryside rather than make a special trip for. It's genuine forestry, with decent paths threading through mature trees, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how few woodland spaces like this are left in the East Midlands.

The walk itself takes about an hour if you mooch around without rushing. Trees here are tall enough to make you feel properly away from it all, even though Newark's within spitting distance. It's free to access and there's no faffing about with gates or admission fees - just turn up and walk. Bring wellies if it's been wet; the ground can be boggy in patches.

Walkers will find it worth an afternoon, particularly in autumn when the canopy changes colour. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - there's no playground or attractions, just woodland. Birdwatchers could spend longer if they're keen. The paths are mostly level, which is a bonus for anyone not after a lung-busting hike.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Camper UK Leisure Park or Lakeside Touring Caravan Park are both within walking distance - Plot Wood makes a decent leg-stretch without needing to drive anywhere. It's the sort of place that feels more valuable on your second visit, once you know what to expect and can just enjoy the peace.
