Spring Wood

Spring Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Newark - nothing flashy, just trees, paths, and fresh air. The forest sits on gently rolling terrain with a mix of mature woodland and younger growth, the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. Paths wind through at a leisurely pace, taking anything from 30 minutes to an hour depending on which route you fancy and how often you stop to look around.

It's the sort of spot that works well for families with younger kids who don't need dramatic scenery to stay happy - they'll be occupied hunting for sticks and spotting wildlife. Dog walkers love it too. The woodland floor is soft underfoot after rain, which is either brilliant or muddy depending on your point of view and what trainers you wore.

If you're based at Lakeside Touring Caravan Park just down the road, Spring Wood makes an easy morning jaunt without needing to pile everyone in the car. Four Seasons Country Park and Trentfield Farm are also within striking distance if you want to string together a few woodland walks across the area. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring water and come with realistic expectations - this is a straightforward local wood, not a major attraction. Admission is free and you can turn up whenever suits. Go early on a weekday if you want peace and quiet; weekends get busier with local dog walkers.
