Plantasia

Plantasia is a tropical glasshouse in Swansea's maritime quarter, and it's absolutely worth an hour of your time if you're touring the area. What you get is a proper warm walk through thousands of plants, fish tanks, and free-roaming butterflies and exotic birds - the kind of place where you forget you're in Wales for a bit.

The whole thing sits inside Victorian glasshouses down by the water. You move through different zones: rainforests, deserts, the works. Kids genuinely enjoy spotting the butterflies (they land on you if you stand still long enough), and the humidity hits you like opening an oven door. It's odd in the best way - stepping from drizzly Swansea into proper jungle air.

It works well if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Swansea Marina Tourer Park or Riverside Holiday Park. Neither is a long drive, so you can tack this on to a day exploring the seafront or Singleton Park. Admission is modest and it's free to wander the grounds outside if you're on a budget.

Realistic assessment? It's not a full-day thing. Ninety minutes covers it comfortably unless you're serious about plant identification. But as a break from caravan life on a damp afternoon, it's hard to beat. Brings a splash of the unexpected to a South Wales coast trip.
