Pitscandly Hill

The walk up Pitscandly Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the time you reach the cairn at the top. From Forfar, it's an easy drive into the Aberdeenshire hills, and once you're up there, the views across the glens and farmland below are genuinely rewarding - proper Highland territory without needing to trek for hours.

This is walkers' terrain, really. The path is well-trodden and the ascent takes maybe 30 to 45 minutes depending on fitness, so it's not one to do with toddlers unless they're keen. But for families with older kids or anyone after a decent hill without the commitment of Ben Nevis, it delivers. The cairn at the summit gives you something tangible to aim for, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Grampians.

Forfar sits close enough that you could make this part of a broader day exploring the area. If you're based at Greenhillock Glamping just up the road, it's a perfect morning outing before settling in for the afternoon. There's nothing fancy at the summit - just the views and the sense of having earned them - which is exactly how it should be. Don't expect crowds, facilities, or drama. Just honest Scottish hill walking.
