Pin Mill - National Trust

The Thames estuary curves round Pin Mill like it's got nowhere better to be, and frankly, neither will you once you arrive. This is a proper working waterfront - not the manicured National Trust kind, but the real deal. Red-sailed barges still moor here, their hulls reflecting in the grey-brown water, and the whole place has that salty, slightly chaotic charm of somewhere that's been earning its living from the water for centuries.

You can walk the foreshore, poke around the old boatyard, and grab a drink at the Butt and Oyster - a ramshackle pub that looks like it might slide into the mud any day now but somehow never does. The views across the water toward the Essex marshes are genuinely lovely, especially at dusk when the light goes golden and weird. A couple of hours is plenty, maybe three if you're the type to sit with a coffee and sketch boats.

Families with young kids might find it a bit too quiet after the initial novelty wears off - there's not much to actually do beyond looking and walking. But if you're into maritime history, working landscapes, or just want somewhere undeniably atmospheric without the crowds, it's worth the short drive south from Ipswich. Several holiday parks sit within five miles - Priory Park and Cosy Camping Suffolk are your closest options if you're basing yourself here. Go when the light's good and the tide's coming in. Avoid busy weekends if you want the place to yourself.
