Pimley Rough

Pimley Rough is a proper working forest just outside Shrewsbury, the kind of place where you'll actually see forestry in action rather than manicured woodland walks. It's a mix of conifer and broadleaf trees across a decent chunk of land, and while there's no visitor centre or marked trails to speak of, that's rather the point - you get a real sense of how these spaces are managed for timber rather than tourism.

Walkers will find plenty to explore here, though you'll need to watch your footing and be prepared to navigate by map rather than signposts. It's the sort of forest that appeals to people who actually like forests - not the Instagram crowd. Families with older kids might enjoy it, but younger ones could find it a bit samey after half an hour, and there's nowhere to grab a coffee at the entrance.

The nearest holiday parks - Ebury Hill and Beaconsfield are both within easy reach, roughly 2.5 to 3 miles away - make this a decent addon to a longer Shropshire break rather than a destination in itself. You're looking at an hour or so if you do a proper wander, longer if you're the type to sit and listen to the trees.

Access appears to be free, though it pays to check locally in Shrewsbury before heading out. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends tend to attract the quad bikers and forestry work vehicles. It's honest, undeveloped, and not for everyone. But if you like your countryside unpolished, you'll get on with it fine.
