Lion Coppice

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist attraction, Lion Coppice sits just outside Shrewsbury and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Shropshire forest - decent trees, decent paths, and room to breathe without the crowds. The name comes from old coppicing practices, though these days it's managed woodland that's genuinely pleasant for an afternoon ramble.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic or imposing, but it's the kind of place where you can actually think, where you might spot deer if you're lucky, and where the light filters through the canopy in ways that make you remember why you wanted to leave the house. Budget two hours minimum if you're doing a proper circuit, though you can duck in and out for shorter strolls. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of - bring what you need from Shrewsbury.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might get bored if you're aiming for a long walk. The paths are fine underfoot most of the time, though winter can turn them muddy. Spring and autumn are genuinely lovely here - less humid than summer, fewer bugs, and you get the woodland floor to yourself.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Beaconsfield or Ebury Hill are closest - it's a five-minute drive and worth fitting into a quieter day between bigger attractions. Not the kind of place you'd plan a trip around, but exactly the kind of place that makes a park holiday feel less like a tick-box exercise.
