Waits Coppice

A proper woodland walk just outside Shrewsbury, Waits Coppice is the sort of place locals know but visitors often miss. The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter, paths wind through dense broadleaf woodland, and there's a real sense of stepping away from things - which matters when you're staying at Beaconsfield Holiday Park just down the road.

It's straightforward woodland rambling rather than a destination with facilities or attractions. You'll find well-worn trails threading through the trees, good for families who want a solid two-hour walk without the uphill slog of moorland hikes. Children tend to cope better here than on open fell - there's always something to spot, whether it's birds in the canopy or the odd bit of fallen timber to scramble over. The paths are manageable underfoot, though they can get muddy after rain, which is most of the time in Shropshire.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no entry fee as far as I can tell - you just turn up and start walking. That's either brilliant or slightly frustrating depending on how much hand-holding you need. The coppice works well as part of a broader park holiday around Shrewsbury: combine it with a morning in town and an afternoon ramble here. If you're based at Sunnyside Farm or Ebury Hill, it's close enough for a gentle weekday outing when the weather's being cooperative. Nothing fancy, but solid woodland that does exactly what it says on the tin.
