Pike of Blisco

The walk up Pike of Blisco is properly steep, but that's rather the point. This 902-metre fell sits above Great Langdale, just a few miles from Ambleside, and the ascent rewards you with views that justify every gasping breath on the way up.

You'll start from the Great Langdale valley floor - there are car parks near the campsite - and gain height quickly. The path winds through fell grass and loose scree, gaining around 550 metres of elevation. It's not a technical climb, but it's relentless, and you'll want proper boots. The summit itself is a proper fell top: windswept, bare, and offering sight lines down to Windermere and across to the Coniston range. On a clear day, it's magnificent. On a grey Lakeland day, it's atmospheric enough to make you feel like you've actually done something.

This one's for walkers, plainly. Children aged ten and up might manage it with breaks, but younger ones will struggle. Experienced hill-walkers could knock out Pike of Blisco in two and a half hours return; allow three to four if you're taking it steady. The nearby campsite at Great Langdale makes it an obvious fit for a walking-based park holiday - you're basically on your doorstep.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no entrance fee. Just the fell itself. If you're staying in the area and fancy a proper walk rather than a stroll, it's worth the detour. Just check the weather first - this one gets bog-standard exposure.
