Pierre's Pot

Walking boots are essential for reaching this lesser-known cave system tucked away in the Mendip Hills near Cheddar. Pierre's Pot isn't your typical tourist cave - it's a proper caving experience that demands some scrambling and a head for tight spaces. The entrance alone requires a bit of nerve as you squeeze through a narrow opening before the cave opens into more generous chambers below.

Serious cavers and adventurous teenagers will love the challenge, but this isn't one for families with young children or anyone uncomfortable with confined spaces. The rock formations are spectacular once you're inside, with limestone carved into flowing shapes by centuries of water action. You'll need torches and probably a local guide unless you really know what you're doing underground.

Unlike the commercial caves in Cheddar Gorge, Pierre's Pot feels properly wild and undeveloped. It's the sort of place that makes you work for the reward. Allow at least half a day if you're planning to explore thoroughly, and check conditions beforehand as heavy rain can make access dangerous.
