Pickwell Down

Standing 158 metres above the North Devon coast, this grassy headland offers some of the finest views along this stretch of the South West Coast Path. The climb from Woolacombe is steady rather than brutal - about 20 minutes of proper walking that'll get your heart going without leaving you gasping.

Families with older children will love it here, though I'd give it a miss with pushchairs or very small ones. The reward at the top is worth every step: sweeping views across Woolacombe Bay on one side and the wilder Morte Point on the other. On clear days, you can spot Lundy Island sitting on the horizon like a sleeping whale.

What makes Pickwell Down special is the sense of space. Unlike some coastal peaks that feel cramped, this one gives you room to spread out and really take in the panorama. The grass is soft enough for a picnic, and there's usually a decent breeze to keep things fresh even on hot summer days.

Walkers tackling the Coast Path will find this a natural stopping point, while families staying at nearby holiday parks like Woolacombe Sands or Golden Coast can easily make this a morning adventure before hitting the beach. Allow two hours including the walk up and time to properly appreciate the view - you'll want to linger longer than you think.
