RSPB Chapel Wood

Dense woodland spills down the hillside just outside Woolacombe, offering a proper escape from the seaside crowds that pack the famous beach below. This RSPB reserve protects a lovely stretch of ancient oak and ash woodland that feels surprisingly wild given how close you are to one of Devon's busiest holiday destinations.

Listen out for nuthatches and treecreepers, while the dawn chorus in spring is absolutely cracking. Even non-twitchers will appreciate the network of paths that wind through the trees, though some sections can get muddy after rain.
