Challacombe Hill

Standing at 145 metres above sea level, this modest hill offers one of the finest coastal panoramas on Devon's north coast. From the summit, you'll catch sweeping views across Woolacombe Bay's three-mile stretch of golden sand, with Lundy Island floating on the horizon on clear days. The climb itself takes about 20 minutes from Woolacombe village - nothing too strenuous, though the final stretch gets a bit steep.

Families with older children will find it manageable, but pushchairs are definitely out of the question. The payoff at the top is proper spectacular, especially around sunset when the light catches the surf below. Photographers particularly love this spot for capturing the dramatic coastline.

There's no formal path to follow - just head up from behind the village and keep climbing. The grassy slopes can get slippery after rain, so decent walking boots are wise. Allow an hour return trip including time to soak up the views.

The hill's open access means you can go any time, though mornings tend to offer the clearest visibility before sea mist rolls in. Well worth the effort for such a short climb.
