Swanpool Marsh Nature Reserve

The marsh sprawls across Devon's north coast near Woolacombe, a proper wetland where freshwater meets brackish water and the whole ecosystem just gets on with it. You're looking at reed beds thick enough to lose yourself in, open water where wildfowl dabble about, and scrubby grassland that transforms depending on the season. Bring binoculars if you've got them - this is a birdwatcher's playground, especially in winter when migrating species pass through, though you'll spot something interesting year-round.

It's an easy walk rather than a proper hike. The paths wind through without demanding much fitness, which means families with young kids won't struggle, and older folk can take their time. Allow an hour to potter about; two if you're genuinely into birds or photography. The light gets interesting in late afternoon, especially when the sun catches the water.

Free access, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of - bring a waterproof if it looks dodgy. Early mornings are quieter and the wildlife more active, so if you're camping at Golden Sands or Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park nearby, slip over at first light before anyone else arrives. The reserve slots nicely into a coastal holiday without eating up much time, though it's more for nature types than those after dramatic views. Not Instagram gold, but genuinely rewarding if you care about watching nature rather than photographing it.
