Pickering Park

The walk around Pickering Park starts innocuously enough - a flat loop through scrubland just outside Beverley - but the birdwatching here is genuinely exceptional. Bring binoculars and patience. You'll spot lapwings, curlews, and if you're lucky, the occasional marsh harrier cutting across the wetland. The reserve is working wetland, not manicured parkland, which means it can look a bit rough around the edges depending on the season. Honestly, that's part of its appeal.

It's a proper destination for serious twitchers or anyone with a genuine interest in wetland birds and their habitat. Casual strollers might find an hour enough; dedicated birders could spend half a day. The paths are straightforward and relatively flat, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Families with young kids will get restless unless they're already keen on spotting wildlife.

Timing matters here. Early morning from April through June is peak season for migrants and breeding birds. Autumn brings its own rewards. Winter can be bleak but occasionally productive. There's no café or facilities to speak of, so bring water and dress for exposure - the fenland offers zero shelter.
