Georgian elegance meets market town practicality in this East Riding gem that's managed to keep its soul intact. Beverley feels genuinely lived-in rather than touristy, with independent shops lining the streets and locals who still chat over garden fences.

The twin towers of Beverley Minster dominate the skyline - properly impressive Gothic architecture that rivals any cathedral. St Mary's Church adds another layer of medieval grandeur, while the Saturday market still draws crowds from across the Wolds. Between them, these landmarks frame a town centre that's refreshingly free from chain store monotony.

Wander beyond the Minster and you'll find yourself in the Westwood, common land that's been grazed for centuries. It's a bit of a trek from the centre but well worth it for the space and fresh air. The town sits at the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, with rolling chalk hills stretching north and the Humber estuary marshes to the south.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The train from Hull takes 15 minutes, while York's about an hour away. Beverley's perfectly positioned for exploring both the coast - Bridlington's 20 miles east - and the Wolds' quiet villages.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. You get the best of both worlds: countryside peace for evenings and weekends, plus easy access to Beverley's shops, pubs, and that rather excellent Saturday market. The surrounding East Riding countryside is ideal for cycling, with quiet lanes threading between villages that time seems to have forgotten.
