Pic Tor

Stone slabs and ancient earthworks crown this windswept hilltop just north of Matlock, offering one of the Peak District's most atmospheric prehistoric sites. Pic Tor's Bronze Age cairn sits at roughly 300 metres, with clear evidence of human activity stretching back over 3,000 years.

The climb up from the nearest parking spot takes about 20 minutes through typical Derbyshire moorland - proper walking boots essential as the ground gets boggy after rain. Once you reach the summit, the views across the Derwent Valley are genuinely spectacular on a clear day.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the well-preserved burial mound and the mysterious stone circles that archaeologists believe were used for ritual purposes. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into ancient history - there's not much obvious drama compared to castles or ruins.

The site works brilliantly as part of a longer walking route, and it's easily accessible from several holiday parks in the area. Darwin Forest and Peak Pods both put you within striking distance for a morning expedition. Allow two hours for the round trip from any of the nearby camping spots like Packhorse Farm or Barn Farm.

Best visited on weekday mornings when you'll likely have the place to yourself. The wind can be fierce up here, so pack layers even in summer.
