Peak District Mining Museum

The Peak District Mining Museum sits just outside Matlock, tucked into the landscape where the region's industrial past still feels tangible. Walking around, you're confronted with the reality of what it took to extract lead, fluorspar and other minerals from these hills - heavy machinery, cramped shafts, the genuine grit of it all. The museum doesn't dress things up with clever theatrics. It shows you the tools, the records, the photographs of the men who spent their working lives underground.

You can actually go down into a restored mine shaft, which is where most visitors spend their time. It's cold, damp, and genuinely claustrophobic in places - kids either find it brilliant or decide they've had enough after twenty minutes. The museum itself covers the geology and the commercial side: which minerals were worth what, who got rich, who got exploited. History buffs will appreciate the detail here; casual tourists might find it heavy going without context.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full experience, less if you skip the underground section. Go in warmer months - the mines are properly chilly. It's a worthwhile stop if you're based at Darwin Forest or Hoe Grange Holidays and planning walks in the area, but I wouldn't recommend detouring specifically for it unless you've got a genuine interest in industrial archaeology. The Matlock area itself offers better attractions for a family holiday.
