Phingask Shore

The beach at Phingask stretches out properly wild and wind-battered, a few miles south of Fraserburgh on Aberdeenshire's northeast coast. It's the kind of shore that feels genuinely remote - golden sand backed by low cliffs, with barely another soul in sight even on decent days. You get proper views across the North Sea, and on clear afternoons the light does something quite special, turning the water that steely grey-blue that makes you understand why people photograph Scottish beaches obsessively.

This isn't a destination for sandcastle architects or paddling toddlers. The beach works best for walkers who don't mind a bit of wind and spray, for photographers after that moody coastal light, or for anyone who simply wants to stand on a beach without navigating crowds. The walk down is straightforward enough, and once you're there you can cover a decent stretch of sand in either direction.

Allow a couple of hours if you're the lingering type. The nearest proper facilities are back in Fraserburgh itself - bring supplies if you're planning to stay a while. The beach is free and accessible year-round, though winter here means serious wind and shorter daylight. Summer's gentler, though still cool.

If you're staying at Down On The Farm just 3.5 miles away, Phingask Shore makes an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere along the coast. It's properly worth the detour if you're after something less manicured than the busier Aberdeenshire beaches, though it definitely rewards a stubborn streak.
