Perry Dale bowl barrow and long barrow

Two Bronze Age mounds sit on the Derbyshire moorland near Hope Valley, and honestly, they're understated in the best way. The bowl barrow and long barrow are ancient burial sites - we're talking 3,500 to 4,000 years old - yet they demand nothing from you except a willingness to climb up and look around.

What you get is straightforward archaeology without the visitor centre fanfare. The mounds themselves are grass-covered lumps rising from the hillside, but stand on top and you're looking out across proper moorland. The landscape hasn't changed much since Bronze Age people were interring their dead here, which is oddly moving if you take a moment to think about it.

Walkers will find this worthwhile as part of a longer moorland ramble rather than a destination in itself. Forty minutes is enough to examine both barrows and soak in the views. Bring an OS map - there's no interpretation board, which means you either come prepared or you're squinting at grass mounds trying to guess what you're looking at. Free to visit, obviously, being essentially unmarked archaeological features on open moorland.
