Perilous Pot

The entrance to Perilous Pot appears suddenly in the limestone landscape near Carnforth, a proper vertical shaft that drops into darkness with enough drama to make your stomach flip. It's a caving experience rather than a casual stroll - you're abseiling down into a natural cave system where the rock is slick and the air distinctly cool even in summer.

This isn't a tourist attraction with handrails and gift shops. Perilous Pot demands respect and basic caving skills. The vertical descent is the main event, and you'll need to be reasonably fit and not bothered by confined spaces. Once you're down, the cave opens up into chambers with proper geological interest - the kind of stuff that makes you understand why people get obsessed with caving. Budget a couple of hours including the return journey, though serious cavers might spend longer exploring the passages.

Families with older kids who've done some outdoor activities might manage it, but younger children will find it unnecessarily nerve-wracking. Solo hikers and experienced cavers absolutely get the most from it. It's free, which is excellent value.

The surrounding Yorkshire landscape is cracking for walkers regardless, so even if the pot itself isn't your thing, the area rewards exploring.
