Pepperdale Covert

The woodland around Pepperdale Covert isn't going to stop you in your tracks the moment you arrive, but spend an hour walking the quieter paths and you'll understand why locals keep coming back. It's a proper working forest in the gently rolling landscape north of Market Rasen, the sort of place where you notice things - the way light filters through the canopy in late afternoon, the occasional deer movement at the forest edge, the smell of pine and damp earth after rain.

You're looking at relatively easy walking through mixed woodland, with a network of tracks that vary from muddy to manageable depending on the season. Bring decent boots and you'll be fine. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so it's very much a self-guided affair - which means you won't queue, won't pay, and won't see the crowds. It's that rare thing: a space where you can actually hear yourself think.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes or so, unless they're the type to hunt for sticks and build dens. But walkers after a gentle morning ramble, and anyone after a break from the caravan site buzz, will appreciate the simplicity of it. Station Farm Caravan and Camping Site is only 4.7 miles away, making this an easy addition to a longer Lincolnshire break. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but it's the sort of place you revisit when you're back in the area.
