Brockenback

The earthworks at Brockenback are what you come for - Iron Age field systems and settlement remains that sprawl across the Lincolnshire landscape like an open book if you know how to read it. It's genuinely atmospheric once you're there, walking between ancient banks and ditches that still rise a metre or so from the ground. You won't find visitor facilities or a gift shop. This is archaeology in the raw.

It's the kind of place that appeals to history enthusiasts and serious walkers far more than casual tourists. Kids might manage an hour before asking when they can get ice cream. Bring binoculars if you're interested in the archaeology - the interpretation isn't always obvious on the ground, and having read up beforehand makes a real difference.

Market Rasen sits just a few miles south, which means you're reasonably placed for exploring this corner of the East Midlands. The site itself is free to access, though you'll need to figure out access arrangements when you arrive - the standard practice for archaeological sites without formal facilities. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Lincolnshire Lanes Camp is the closest at just under four miles away - and you can pair this visit with walks across the surrounding countryside. It's worth doing, particularly if you're already exploring the wider landscape around Market Rasen. Don't expect crowds or interpretation panels. Come for the sense of stepping back into Iron Age settlement patterns, not for creature comforts.
