Pepper Pot

You'll spot this squat, circular stone tower standing alone near Carnforth long before you reach it - that's the Pepper Pot, a proper oddity of Cumbrian heritage. Built in the 18th century as a folly or possibly a salt store (historians still aren't entirely sure, which adds to the charm), it's exactly what it sounds like: a small, sturdy cylinder of local stone with precious little inside to explore.

The appeal here is less about spending hours investigating and more about the 'why on earth is this here?' factor. You walk up to it, peer inside if there's access, appreciate the craftsmanship of its construction, and then you're essentially done. History enthusiasts will find it interesting as a minor curiosity; kids might get a mild kick out of it as a waypoint during a longer walk around the area.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Holgates is barely half a mile away, or Bay View and Haven Lakeland are both within easy reach - it's worth a twenty-minute detour rather than a destination trip in itself. The real value comes from combining it with a walk across the surrounding Lancashire landscape. Don't expect facilities, admission charges, or opening hours to be fussed over here. Just turn up, look, and move on.
