Penycastell

The ruins of Penycastell sit on a hilltop just inland from Aberystwyth, commanding views across Cardigan Bay that justify the climb alone. What remains are fragments of stone walls from a medieval stronghold - not dramatic enough to warrant a dedicated trip from miles away, but absolutely worth diverting to if you're already exploring this corner of Ceredigion.

The walk up takes maybe ten minutes from the car park, though the gradient is proper steep for what amounts to a handful of crumbling walls. On a clear day the perspective over the bay and down to Aberystwyth's seafront is genuinely lovely. History buffs will appreciate the position - this was a fortification built to control the local area, though you won't find much interpretation or detailed signage once you get there.

Really it's best suited to walkers doing a longer ramble in the area, or families who fancy a short leg-stretcher with a reward at the top. Kids might lose interest after fifteen minutes. Allow an hour if you're doing the full walk from the base and taking time to soak in the view.

It works well as a half-day add-on to a Ceredigion park holiday. Dôl Swynol Glamping, five miles away, puts you within easy reach. Pair it with a wander around Aberystwyth itself - the seafront, the castle ruins there, the promenade - and you've got a solid morning sorted. Free to visit, naturally, though there's minimal infrastructure up top. Go early or late to avoid the worst of any crowd, though honestly that's rarely an issue.
