Penwarne

Penwarne is a Bronze Age settlement tucked into the Cornish landscape near Helston, where the remains of ancient roundhouses still command the hillside. You won't find manicured paths or interpretation boards here - this is archaeology as it actually sits in the countryside, quiet and unassuming. The site consists of several house platforms and field systems dating back roughly 3,500 years, giving you a proper sense of how people lived when farming first took root in Cornwall.

It's best suited to walkers with a genuine interest in prehistory rather than families after an afternoon's entertainment. You'll need to find your own way to the site and piece together what you're looking at from landscape clues alone - the absence of visitor infrastructure is exactly why it feels authentic. Allow an hour to wander the platforms and soak in the views across the moorland. There's something meditative about standing on a spot where Bronze Age farmers once made decisions about their lives.

Timing-wise, spring through autumn works best when the ground isn't waterlogged and the surrounding moorland is at its most forgiving. It sits well within a wider exploration of Cornwall's Penwith archaeological landscape if you're staying at one of the excellent glamping spots nearby - Stay Wild is just four miles away, or Tresyjo and Little Menherion within six. The site costs nothing, which feels appropriate for somewhere this raw and undeveloped. Don't expect signposting; do expect genuine connection to deep Cornish history.
