Penrhos Swimming Pool sits just outside Llanrhystud, a proper working facility that serves the local community rather than pulling in coach tours. It's the sort of place where families actually swim rather than pose for photos - and that's its strength.

The pool itself is straightforward: an outdoor facility where you can splash about without the chlorine theatre of leisure centres. On decent weather days it's genuinely pleasant, with that slightly windswept Welsh coastal feel. Water temperature won't win awards, mind you. Kids get a kick out of it, especially in summer months when the place feels properly alive. Adults after serious lengths might find it a bit limited depending on what's on offer that day.

Being genuinely local means opening hours and admission aren't always advertised heavily - best ringing ahead or checking with Llanrhystud itself. It's free or very cheap, which tells you what you're getting: community facility, not destination attraction. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're coming as a family, longer if you want to properly tire the kids out.

Within a mile or so you've got Pengarreg Caravan Park and Morfa Farm, both close enough for an easy trip. The wider area - Woodlands at Llanon, Brynarian, Morfa Bychan - all work as bases if you're combining this with the Ceredigion coast proper. It's not a reason to visit Wales on its own, but if you're staying locally with children, it's exactly the sort of unpretentious spot that actually gets used.
