Castell Talwrn

A crumbling ring of stone sits on moorland above Llanrhystud, and it's been there for around two thousand years. Castell Talwrn is an Iron Age hill fort - the sort of place that stops you mid-walk because suddenly the landscape makes sense. You can see why someone built here: the views stretch across Cardigan Bay, and anything approaching from the coast would be spotted from a mile off.

What you actually get is earthworks and the remnants of a defensive ditch, plus scattered stones that hint at structures long gone. It's not dramatic like Pen Dinas down the coast, but it rewards a proper look around. The fort's probably Roman-era too, occupied during the conquest attempts, which adds layers to what you're standing in.

History buffs will spend an hour working out the layout and imagining the settlement. Walkers treat it as a waypoint on longer moorland routes - the approach from Llanrhystud itself is straightforward enough. Families with young kids might find it a bit abstract unless someone's keen on archaeology; there's no interpretation board, no facilities, just the bones of the place.

It's free, open access, and works best as part of a wider walk rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the coastal paths and caravan bases like Pengarreg or Morfa Farm - both five miles away - and you've got something proper. Go on a clear day. Mist rolls in fast here, and half the point is seeing what the inhabitants could see.
